There are many private operators of historic aircraft in the UK, however the Royal Air Force still has Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancasters on charge retaining military serial numbers .The organisation responsible for keeping these machines flying is of course the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.The BBMF is a flying memorial to the thousands of Royal Air Force personnel who died to secure Britain's future

A large scale model of the RAF's Hawker Hurricane, in service with 85 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In the ten days of Blitzkrieg 85 Squadron lost 24 Hurricanes in action, bringing just three back from the continent. However, it had exacted a heavy toll on the Luftwaffe, the unit’s pilots being credited with 90 confirmed kills. One of No 85 Sqn’s more successful members was South African Albert Lewis, whose seven-kill tally in France included five Bf 109Es downed on 19 May. Awarded a DFC for his exploits the following month, Lewis adopted P2923 soon after it arrived at Castle Camps on 11 June. This aircraft was lost in combat in August 1940 while being flown by fellow No 85 Sqn ace (and Lewis’s close friend) Flg Off ‘Dickie’ Lee. The latter was seen to chase a trio of Bf 109Es out to sea some ten miles off the Essex coast. No traces of Lee or P2923 were ever found.

The 1/32nd scale Spitfire features very high levels of intricate detail including removable engine covers with fully detailed engine, sliding cockpit canopy and hinged door with pilot figure, removable gun covers with fitted machine guns, moving flaps, rudder, air brakes, ailerons and elevators. A fully retractable undercarriage is fitted along with a rotating propeller. Cradle display stand supplied.
Pilot Officer Alan Deere used this aircraft to shoot down a Bf109E on the 24th May 1940 and a Bf110 on the 25th May during actions in support of the Dunkirk evacuation where he was credited with seven victories, plus 1 shared, 1 unconfirmed and 1 damaged in just five days. The aircraft was shot down on 9 July 1940 over the channel and Pilot Officer A.Evershed was killed.

A superb large scale model of Hawker Hurricane MkIIc PZ865 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Currently this aircraft is painted as Mk.IIc BE581 ‘Night Reaper’, flown by Czech fighter ace Flt Lt Karel Kuttelwascher DFC on night intruder operations with No.1 squadron in 1942. In only 15 night intruder missions ‘Kut’, as he was know to his colleagues, shot down 15 enemy bombers (3 in one night on 5 May 1942), damaged a further five bombers and shot up several steam locomotives and ‘E’ boats. Using Hurricanes fitted with drop tanks night intruder pilots could fly sorties up to 3½ hours, often in poor conditions and completely alone. ‘Kut’s aircraft, BE581 ‘JX-E’, wore the ‘Night Reaper’ motif on the starboard engine cowling and ‘Kut’ had swastika ‘kill’ symbols painted under the cockpit on the port side. When his three kills from the night of 5 May 1942 were added there were 11 swastika symbols displayed. Due to flak damage Night Reaper received a black painted fin and a panel on the port wing from a ‘Turbinlite’ Hurricane (BD770). These details have been faithfully replicated on PZ865, presenting a ‘snapshot in time’.
