Meanwhile, No. 208 Squadron re-formed at Honington on 1st July 1974 with Buccaneer S.Mk.2As acquired from the Royal Navy. The more versatile S.Mk.2B supplemented these later and the squadron moved to Lossiemouth, Morayshire in July 1983. During WWII, No. 208 Squadron served extensively in Egypt and in the Western Desert. Consequently it adopted the Sphinx as its squadron badge and it is the winged eye of the Sphinx that has been worn on the tail of its Buccaneers and is faithfully reproduced on this Corgi model. In 1984, XX895 was transferred from Germany to No. 237 OCU at Lossiemouth, then to No.12 Squadron and finally to No. 208 Squadron in 1989 until its retirement in December 1993. New 1/72 scale Buccaneer features clear canopy with pilot figure, interchangeable undercarriage, bomb bay detail, authentic armament, opening air brakes and faithfully reproduced livery.

more | Corgi 1/72 Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S Mk50 25 Sqdn South African Air Force Watekloof 1970 (AA34106) South Africa was the only overseas country to order the type and 16 were ordered by the South African Air Force designated S.Mk.50, which was a land-based export variant equivalent of the S.Mk.2, without hydraulic wing-folding gear. The first of these flew from Holme-on-Spalding Moor on 9 January 1965. Between the placing of the order and the first flight, opposition had grown to the supply of arms to South Africa in view in the country’s apartheid policy. Consequently, the British Government announced that it would permit no more than the first order for 16 aircraft to be delivered. Deliveries were completed in 1966 and formed No.24 Squadron at Waterkloof, Pretoria. The last of the South African Air Force Buccaneers remained in service until 1990, as Britain refused to supply spare parts for these to South Africa as part of its continued arms embargo. ‘414’ was the fourth of the batch to be built and is now preserved by the South African Air Force.

more | Corgi 1/72 Panavia Tornado IDS MFG-1 German Navy Schleswig Germany 1988 (AA33608) In 1974 German officials drastically reduced their order of originally 700 aircraft to 324 examples, of which 112 were bound for the German Navy. This meant, the Tornado would only replace the F-104G Starfighter in both Navy and Air Force. MFG 1 had the honour to be the first Bundesmarine unit to be equipped with the multirole aircraft, as they started conversion in 1982. It took approximately one year until all of the 48 Tornados were received. Navy crews were delighted with the performance of the newly acquired aircraft, as the Starfighter had never been the Navy's choice. The Tornado marked a vast improvement in respects of weaponsload, avionics, navigational aids and accuracy, range and safety. After the reunification and with a disappearing threat from the east, the German armed forces had to reduce costs drastically. Amongst others, MFG 1 was one of the units to be disestablished. This took place on 31st December 1993 | |

No.56 Squadron, at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, re-equipped from the Lightning F.Mk.1A to the F.Mk.3 early in 1965., following No.111 Squadron also based there. The latter had formed a display team with their Lightnings in 1965, as No.56 Squadron had done in 1963, and painted their new mounts with a very smart black and yellow trim. With the friendly inter-squadron rivalry, not wishing to be ‘outdone’, No.56 Squadron painted their new Lightning F.3s with the entire tail fin in red and white checks as the ultimate in colourful squadron markings!

In addition, they served in the air defence role from 1978 onwards with seven ANG fighter interceptor squadrons and with an air defence training squadron. Most of the ANG's F-4Cs were replaced by later-model F-4Ds and Es (as well as by F-15s and F-16s) during the mid- to late- 1980s. The 171st Fighter Interceptor Squadron received their F-4C's in 1978 being the first ANG unit to transition from F-106 Delta Darts. The squadron went on to operate F-4D's and then in 1990 re-equipped with F-16A Fighting Falcons, which it flies today. The last ANG squadron to fly the F-4C, the 123rd FIS of the Oregon ANG, exchanged its F-4Cs for F-15As in the spring of 1989. As they left ANG service, the F-4Cs were retired to the boneyards at Davis-Monthan AFB or were converted into target drones. None remain in service with any ANG units today.
