This remarkable fighter plane is shown in the markings of the 72nd Fighter Squadron of the 15th Fighter Group. This FG was part of Hawaii’s air defense force and it suffered terrible casualties during the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941, many planes being destroyed while neatly arrayed on the tarmac. The subject of this 1/72 scale model is “Squinty”, a plane flown by 1Lt James O Beckwith shortly after the deadly attack on Pearl Harbor. Beckwith was later to command the 15th FG, which fought in various campaigns in the Pacific Theater. The P-40 was a rugged aircraft, and Warbirds’ replica is equally robust as well as being finely detailed.

In fact, “Gabby” was to reach thirty-one kills (28 aerial, and 3 on the ground) before he was shot down on 20 July1944 and forced to spend the rest of the war in a German POW camp. At the time this made him the highest scoring ace of the war, although several others were to pass his tally by the end of WWII. Later he also added another 6.5 kills during the Korean War. Christened “Ole Miss Lib”, it represents the aircraft of Captain Thomas W. Smith of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th FG, in early 1945. The name stems from the fact that the pilot’s wife “Lib” (Elizabeth) had returned to complete her studies at “Ole Miss” (the University of Mississippi). The 63rd FS had been activated in January 1941, and the “Panthers” became one of the most successful squadrons in the U.S. Air Force, with 167.5 aerial kills, and 110 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground. Not only was the 56th FG the first to receive the Thunderbolt, but the 63rd FS also kept theirs until the end of the war.

The Fw 190 was well-liked by its pilots and at the time of its introduction in 1941, this Luftwaffe workhorse fighter was considered superior to the Spitfire Mk. V, it was so effective that more than 20,000 were manufactured. Dragon Warbirds’ new 1/72 scale die-cast replica portrays an aircraft of 3./JG.51 flown by then Leutnant Josef Jennewein. The Fw 190A-4 carries a superbly painted two-colour summer camouflage scheme used at this time in June 1943 in the region of Orel on the Eastern Front. The distinctive “5” is finely displayed on the fuselage sides. Josef Jennewein acheived fame as a world champion skier, however he is better remembered as a Luftwaffe Ace.
