This Warbird model stands out as it comes complete with an amazingly detailed scenic base. The diorama shows a section of a typical airstrip with the aircraft proudly mounted on it. The P-47D is the later “bubble canopy” version and all its details are accurately moulded. The replica is finished in an accurate paint scheme and a colourful set of markings that replicate the actual aircraft of Major Glenn Eagleston. This ace claimed 18.5 aerial victories in WWII and later flew F-86 Sabre jets in the Korean War where he also downed two MiG-15 jets. Josef “Sepp” Wurmheller was born on 4 May 1917 at Hausham in Oberbayern. He was an accomplished glider and powered aircraft pilot pre-war. He began his training as a fighter pilot in the Luftwaffe in 1937. By summer of 1938, Gefreiter Wurmheller was serving with 2./JG 334. At the outbreak of World War 2, Unteroffizier Wurmheller was serving with 2./JG 53.On 22 June 1944 during aerial combat with Allied fighters near Alençon when he collided with his wingman. He was posthumously awarded the Schwerten (Nr 108) and promoted to the rank of Major on 24 October. Josef “Sepp” Wurmheller achieved 102 victories. He recorded nine victories over the Eastern Front. Of the 93 victories recorded over the Western Front, at least 20 were four-engine bombers and at least 56 RAF Spitfire fightersmore.. | |

After the experience in the early part of the war with F4F Wildcats, Grumman consulted with Allied Air Forces to develop a successor to the F4F. This new aircraft was to be called the F6F Hellcat. The prototype, XF6F-1, first flew on June 26, 1942. The first production model was the F6F-3, which first flew in October 1942. Grumman then produced an improved Hellcat designated the F6F-5. This Hellcat first flew on April 4, 1944. This new model quickly replaced the F6F-3 models. Production lasted until November 1945, when the F8F replaced the F6F. Hellcats are credited with the destruction of 4,947 aircraft up to V-J Day. The Hellcat was the first aircraft the Navy had for its Blue Angels demonstration team.more.. | |

Dragon Armor have announced a sizzling 1/72 scale model of a P-47M Thunderbolt. Christened “Ole Miss Lib”, it represents the aircraft of Captain Thomas W. Smith of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th FG, in early 1945. The name stems from the fact that the pilot’s wife “Lib” (Elizabeth) had returned to complete her studies at “Ole Miss” (the University of Mississippi). The 63rd FS had been activated in January 1941, and the “Panthers” became one of the most successful squadrons in the U.S. Air Force, with 167.5 aerial kills, and 110 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground. Not only was the 56th FG the first to receive the Thunderbolt, but the 63rd FS also kept theirs until the end of the war. | |

Dragon Warbirds has unveiled a splendid 1:72nd model of an Fw 190A-3. It carries typical armaments plus a 300-litre drop tank under the fuselage. It represents “Black 7”, the aircraft flown by Luftwaffe ace Oberleutenant Karl Borris. He was appointed Staffelkapitan of 8./JG 26 on 10 November 1941 and he finished WWII with a tally of 43 aerial victories in the West by the end of the war. The highly detailed model is produced to Dragon’s exacting specifications and is finely painted and finished. It includes recessed panel lines and opening canopy but the unique thing about this model is its diorama base. The 1:72 scale model is mounted on a compass platform, an apparatus designed to raise the tail of an aircraft to allow it to test its guns on the ground. The diorama base includes this special ramp and a realistic-looking landscape that is even littered with oil drums that make this a truly inspirational collectors’ item! | |
