The 60th Fighter Squadron is one of two combat flying squadrons in the 33d Fighter Wing Operations Group, 33d Fighter Wing.

The mission of the 60th Fighter Squadron is to prepare and maintain a 24 Primary Assigned Aircraft (PAA) combat-coded F-15C squadron for worldwide deployment and air combat operations. The squadron plans and executes an annual flying hour program of over 5,700 sorties to train and maintain the combat readiness of 32 pilots and 300 maintenance personnel for operational taskings in the world's most sophisticated air superiority aircraft.

The 22nd Fighter Squadron was originally constituted as the 22nd Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) on 22 December 1939. It was activated on 1 February 1940 at Langley Field, VA, and was assigned to the 36th Pursuit (later, 36th Fighter) Group.

It was redesignated as the 22nd Fighter Squadron, Jet Propelled, on 27 October 1947. The unit relocated to Furstenfeldbruck AB, Germany, on 13 August 1948 and was redesignated as the 22nd Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 20 January 1950. That same year, the squadron transitioned to the F-84. The 22nd then relocated to Bitburg AB, Germany, on 28 October 1952, where it remained until the base's closure, and was redesigntated as the 22nd Fighter-Day Squadron on 9 August 1954. Having converted in 1956 to the F-100, the 22nd was reassigned to the 36th Fighter-Day (later, 36th Tactical Fighter, 36th Fighter) Wing, on 8 December of the following year. It was redesignated, on 8 July 1957, as the 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron. The 22nd converted to the F-105 aircraft in 1961, to the F-4 in 1966, and to the F-15 in 1977. The squadron has been tasked with maintaining combat fighter proficiency in Europe since 1948.

The 3rd Wing is the host unit for Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. It is the largest and principal organization in Eleventh Air Force. Its mission is to support and defend U.S. interests in the region and around the world by providing units who are ready for worldwide air power projection and a base that is capable of meeting PACOM's theatre staging and throughput requirements. The mission of the 90th Fighter Squadron is to be a combat-ready fighter squadron prepared for rapid worldwide deployment of F-15E aircraft to accomplish precision engagement of surface targets using a wide variety of conventional air-to-surface munitions. The squadron trains in the fighter missions of strategic attack, interdiction, offensive counter-air (air-to-surface), suppression of enemy defences, as well as offensive and defensive counter-air (air-to-air). The heritage of the 90th "Pair O'Dice" Fighter Squadron dates back to early 1917 when it was organized as the 90th Aero Squadron on 20 August 1917 at Kelly Field, TX.
