| Bravo Delta 1/72 Short S-25 Sunderland Flying Boat (023)
Large desktop display model of the classic RAF marine patrol Sunderland flying boat. Constructed to Bravo Delta's high standards with excellent paint detail and seperate propellers and display stand included. Length 14¼in 361mm, Wingspan 14¼in 361mm
The RAF Sunderland was developed from civilian flying boats built for Imperial Airways it represented a dramatic increase in fighting capability over earlier, biplane boats. Following the outbreak of war in 1939 the Sunderland was deployed by coastal command on convey protection, utilising the aircrafts 3,000 mile range to hunt and destroy U-boats in the Atlantic. The Sunderland other principal role was serch and rescue, locating airmen and seamen in the ocean and guiding surface rescue vessels. The aircraft was so well protected and defended that the Luftwaffe nicknamed it 'the flying porcupine', flying at very low levels to prevent enemy fighters from getting below their aircraft Sunderland crews destroyed many enemy aircraft and freqently drove off their attackers. The Mark III introduced an improved hull form and from 1940 Sunderlands carried ASV radar and Leigh lights to illuminating surfaced submarines during night attacks.
739 Sunderlands were built and the veteran flying boat's last sortie took place on 15 May 1959 from Singapore. | |
