In the protracted fighting in Vietnam, with constant threats from guerilla attacks springing from any direction, GIs developed their heavily armed “gun trucks”. These gun trucks protected vulnerable convoys, and offered increased protection and firepower for their occupants. This tradition lives on in Iraq. With threats from small-arms fire, RPGs and IEDs, American troops resorted to the expedient of adding armor to many of their vehicles. Dragon’s newest M998 “Gun Truck” is precisely one such vehicle. The basic HMMWV has had steel plates added around the rear cargo compartment, while an M60 machine gun with armored shield has been mounted in the cargo bed. Item 60261 features an L/70 Late Production variant fighting in Germany in 1945 in the final months of WWII. There are several things that make this particular 1/72 scale model stand out from its peers. The most obvious is the stunning paint scheme – it consists of a white winter whitewash broken up with mottled sand color patches. This vehicle also has a new style of exhaust muffler characteristic of a Late Production derivative, plus a complete set of Schurzen side skirts is installed. The pre-assembled model is tastefully and realistically weathered. The other thing of particular interest to collectors is that this vehicle is being produced in strictly limited quantities. he Jagdpanzer IV L/70 was a modified version of the original tank hunter, being based on the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H or J tank chassis. It was fitted with a 75mm PaK 42 L/70 gun without a muzzle brake and a solitary MG42. The main gun could traverse 12˚ to the left and right and it had an elevation of -7˚ to +15˚. Dragon Armor has released this next Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Late Production version, representing a vehicle from an unidentified unit. It is adorned in a three-tone camouflage scheme consisting of bold stripes and is tastefully weathered, as demonstrated by the lifelike look of the tracks. The 1/72 scale model is fitted with a full set of side skirts and has the late style of exhaust muffler. Collectors will want to be cognizant of the fact that, like the previous model, this is a strictly limited edition. A new Jagdtiger model has been announced in the Dragon Armor range, it portrays a Henschel Production version, though this time with a different three-colour camouflage scheme. This version has the anti-mine coating Zimmerit applied and has a crane installed on the roof, a device used to raise the roof plate to allow maintenance of the interior. With it's 12.8cm PAK44 L/55 gun, it was a formidable opponent on the battlefield. It is uncertain what unit this vehicle belongs to even though there were only two schwere Panzerjager Abteilung Jagdtiger units ever formed. It is known that this tank destroyer saw combat in Austria in 1945. Only 77 of these behemoths were produced between July 1944 and March 1945 but fortunately this model is much more widely available! | |

Dragon Armor has previously released “captured” tanks in its 1/72 scale range. These have included a T-34/76 in German use and a Sherman Firefly also in German service. Germany was critically short of tanks after it bit off more than it could chew by opening an Eastern Front against Russia, so it employed additional tanks wherever it could find them. However, in Dragon Armor’s latest release the shoe is on the other foot (or should that be the track is on the other road wheel?)! This time, a captured German Panther Ausf. G tank is in service with a Russian unit! The tank still carries its original 3-colour camo scheme but it is identified as a Russian tank by the red star with white outline painted on the turret sides. The German camo scheme and the recently added Soviet insignia are carefully painted over a textured coat of zimmerit. | |

This was a specialist version designed for use by assault engineers, and it is easily distinguished by the fittings on both sides of the hull for carrying bridge sections. This fine 1/72 scale vehicle is painted in a two-tone camouflage scheme typical of the period. This 1/72 scale model represents a U.S. Army M4A3 105mm howitzer the 8th Tank Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. This division is distinguished by the fact that it never adopted an official nickname, though the Germans referred to it as “Roosevelt’s Butchers”! The division landed at Utah Beach on 11 July 1944, and combat operations began on the 17th. It was used as an exploitation force for Operation Cobra, the U.S. breakout from Normandy. In August 1944 it swung south to take Nantes, thus cutting off the Brittany Peninsular. As WWII drew to an irrevocable end in 1945, Germany’s panzer forces were scraping the barrel in terms of the armoured vehicles it could field. One such example is the Tiger I represented in Dragon Armor’s latest release. It portrays a hybrid Tiger, an early version retrofitted with steel wheels. It belonged to Feldwebel Beloff and was part of the ad-hoc Tiger-Gruppe Fehrmann formation formed in the spring of 1945. This Tiger was actually blown up by its crew on 11 April 1945 as Russian forces closed in on it. Tiger-Gruppe Fehrmann was a hotchpotch of Tiger tanks collected together in Fallingbostel. To give some semblance of regularity the unit’s mix of tanks was painted in an unusual slate gray colour, with green and brown patches of their older camouflage schemes still poking through. This 1/72 scale Tiger tank from Dragon Armor perfectly captures the look of such a late-war vehicle, particularly in its unique paint scheme. Details are carefully reproduced with accuracy uppermost in the minds of the designers. This is a fine model of a rare Tiger with a most extraordinary history behind it. | |

ragon Armor has released a number of Sd.Kfz. 251 halftrack variants in its 1/72 range. These have been popularly received by collectors, so Dragon has provided another interesting version to please fans of this attractive German armoured vehicle. The Sd.Kfz. 251/7 was a vehicle used by combat engineers (also known as pioneers) and so carried bridging sections and engineering equipment such as explosives. The Ausf. D version was the final production version of the Sd.Kfz. 251 series with simplified construction. This new version mounts a sPzB41 2.8cm anti-tank gun, was employed on the Eastern Front at the commencement of Operation Barbarossa and also saw action in North Africa and Western Europe. he latest item from Dragon Armor offers collectors a novel twist – it shows a Sherman Firefly undergoing treatment at the paint shop! The Firefly, a British adaptation of the Sherman that mounted a 17pdr gun, was the only British tank in WWII that could hope for some kind of parity with heavier German tanks. However, when it came to mechanical reliability and industrial capacity, the Allies were more than a match for the Third Reich. As the war wore on and Germany’s industrial might could no longer keep pace in terms of tank production, captured Russian and Allied tanks were sometimes put into German service as a matter of desperation or expediency. 60319 is a Firefly Vc and includes a scale German figure brushing new markings onto the captured tank, the tank has had a series of white crosses, plus 'G' and 'W' painted on as an early form of identification Friend or Foe! more.. | |
