The only RAF Squadron in the Middle East to operate the FR.Mk9 was No 208 Squadron, which had been based at Hal Far, Malta until it moved to Nicosia in Cyprus in March 1956, where it mounted patrols to seek out terrorists in Cyprus, returning to Malta in August the same year. With the arrival of Meteors came new squadron markings of bars flanking the roundels comprising sky blue and yellow horizontal bands, denoting the sky and desert.These markings are still carried today. No.41 Squadron was re-equipped with Jaguars, replacing Phantoms, in 1977, and the squadron moved to its current home at Coltishall in Norfolk. Here it specialised in low level reconnaissance and the squadron made numerous operational deployments, including both Gulf Wars and the Deny Flight. This particular Jaguar GR.3 had its tail decorated in a special scheme for display flying by Flt.Lt. Derek Sington during 2005.

The model features a wingspan 120mm but as the aircraft was consideraly longer than its span this understates its size.

No.603 reformed as a unit of the Auxillary Air Force on the 10th May 1946 and began recruiting personnel to man a Spitfire squadron during June at Turnhouse.Receiving its first Spitfire in October.It flew this type until conversion to Vampires in May 1951

The MiG-29 "Fulcrum" was one of the Soviet Union's most important combat aircraft in the last years of the Cold War, and remains an important military asset for the successor Russian Republic.It has been widely exported, and is now being updated with improved systems to keep it well into the 21st century.The colour scheme was used for only one flight.This was the last official flight of the East German Air Force on the 27th September 1990.This special aircraft was named die Traditionsmaschine (the traditional aircraft)

The Vampire was a first generation jet fighter which saw service in the immediate post-war period with Royal Air Force front-line fighter squadrons in the United Kingdom and Germany, followed by further service with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. During the early part of WWII, the Squadron and its Lysanders were based in Palestine, but detached aircraft to the Western Desert until 1941 when Hurricanes were on strength. Further action in the Desert on anti-tank duties continued from 1942 until the end of the North African campaign. After converting to rocket-firing Hurricanes in 1944, the Squadron moved to Italy and flew the remainder of the War over the Balkans. A brief stint in Palestine after the War was followed by a move to Cyprus with Tempests. During 1948 the unit received Vampires and a series of moves around the Middle East followed before finally arriving back in Cyprus with Venoms.

In time of war the Harrier was to be deployed away from established airfields which were vunerable to attack.Instead it was to be operated from short, rough strips of ground and hidden in camouflaged 'hides' from which it would attack the enemy's approaching armoured formations. These qualities came in to their own during the Flaklands War.RAF Harriers were deployed to the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Hermes as part of the task force sent to recapture the Falklands Islands.The Harrier GR3 performed sorties from the aircraft carrier and later from basic landing strips on the islands, often in conditions that would have grounded conventional aircraft

By 1980 the BAe Hawk equipped 4 FTS in the advanced training role at RAF Valley, 1 & 2 Tactical Weapons Unit RAF Brawdy and Chivenor respectively in the Tactical Weapons training role and 2 Central Flying School units.In 1983 No.151 Squadron reformed as a RAF Reserve Squadron within 2TWU at RAF Chivenor, Devon until April 1982 when 2TWU was redesignated 7 Flying Training School.The new unit along with 4FTS at RAF Valley were to become part of the "mirror" training scheme

The Vampire line came to an end with the Vampire FB.Mk.9 an air conditioned version of the FB.Mk.5. All told, 1900 single seat Vampires were built by December 1953 when production ceased. The old jets flew on however with several remaining in active service in Switzerland until 1990. Today No.28 squadron flies Merlin helicopters from RAF Benson,Oxon

No.208 (Reserve) Squadron is stationed at RAF Valley on the Isle of Anglesey, which is home to No.4 Flying Training School, responsible for the training of RAF and Royal Navy fast jet pilots.208 (R) Squadron teaches basic handling of the Hawk. 19(R) Squadron teaches tactics and engineering skills.The squadron has been using the Hawk since 1994.The badge on the tail fin is from the 1930's when 208 Sqn. was serving in the Middle East.The wings denote flight and the eye is the Egyptian god 'Horus' which together depict the Squadron's role of anti aircraft reconnaissance

According to the Iraqi POW's the single most recognizable and feared aircraft at low altitude was the Thunderbolt ll.Seen conducting bombing raids three or four times a day, the A-10 was a semmingly ubiquitous threat.Although the actual bomb run was terrifying, the aircraft loitering the target prior to target acquistion caused as much, if not more, anxiety since the Iraqi soldiers were unsure of the chosen target

It is not widely known, but the Canadair Sabre served with the Royal air Force for a brief time.During the early 1950's , the Sabres of the RCAF were actually the only swept-wing fighters available for the defense of Western Europe.At the time the RAF were still flying straight-winged types as the Meteor and Vampire while waiting for the Swift and Hunter to reach production status. Early in 1953 the RAF somewhat releluctantly decided to aquire the Canadair Sabre to fill in the gap 2 TAF Sabre Conversion Unit were baswed at Wildenrath in Germany from the 10th March 1953 until 30th June 1954

The Skyblazers were formed in 1948 and carried on through to 1962.The team would receive official status as a team in 1950 and were originally from the 22nd Fighter Bomber Squadron which was part of the 36th Fighter Bomber Group.They were equipped with four F-80Bs Shooting Stars and were stationed at Furstenfeldbruck, West Germany.The entire wing began to transition to the F-86F Sabre during 1953.HQ.USAFE decided they wished to have the team transferred to the 48th Fighter Wing which meant that the 86th FW Skyblazers flew their last F-84E equipped airshow during July 1953

The Mikoyan MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Union in 1983. Today, it remains in use by the  Russian Air Force and many other countries. The idea for the  MiG-29 came about in 1969 when  the Soviet Union learned about the USAF F-15 Eagle. This new fighter jet would be more technologically advanced than anything the Soviets were using at the time

The first unit to receive the A-10 in March 1976, the 355th W recently celebrated three decades of uninterrupted service with the jet. Although missing out on Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom I, the wing recently sent to 354th FS into combat from Bagram AB in support of Coalition forces fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan as art of Operation Enduring Freedom. The squadronÕs jets flew daily operations in-theater from late 2005 through February 2006. Aside from short spells in storage in then nearby Aerospace Maintenance & Regeneration Center, this particular aircraft has served exclusively with the 355th since it was delivered to the USAF in 1979.'
