Powered by two 15,680lb thrust Rolls-Royce Avon afterburning turbojets, the Lightning first entered service during the summer of 1960 at Coltishall in Norfolk with the designation F. Mk.1. XN779 first flew on 20th January 1963 - coded " X " it spent nearly all its life patrolling the east-west Berlin Corridor until withdrawn from use in August 1973 and reduced to spares.
