The Buccaneer was designed as a low level high speed bomber for the Royal Navy and it began this role in 1959 with the first deck landing on HMS Victorious. Corgi chose to model the S. Mk.2 fitted with Spey engines that entered service in 1965 and it is an aircraft of 809 Squadron presented in overall dark sea grey - as it would have appeared in 1968 whilst shore based at Lossiemouth after sea duty on HMS Hermes. Serving with the navy until 1978, when HMS Ark Royal was retired, the aircraft modelled XV344 escaped RAF service by going to Farnborough as a trials aircraft. On final retirement it was preserved and remains on display at RAE Farnborough today. The model includes facility for undercarriage or stand display and has a working airbrake. | |
