Corgi 1/144 Avro Vulcan K2 Tanker 50 Sqdn RAF Waddington 1982 (AA31203)
By the end of March 1982, the Royal Air Force Vulcan B.2 fleet had been reduced to three squadrons, all based at Waddington, and the final withdrawal of the type was imminent. However, the Falklands conflict was to substantially change these plans, leading to the Vulcan’s use in anger for the first time in nearly 25 years of service. The ‘Black Buck’ bombing operations have already been marked by a Corgi model of a Vulcan bomber, but the shortage of tankers after the Falklands operations meant the Vulcan was about to be adapted to a new role – a tanker! 101 Squadron disbanded on 4th August 1982, followed by 44 Squadron on 21 December, leaving 50 Squadron as the only Vulcan unit to survive into 1983 after its aircraft had received a new lease of life directly resulting from the War with Argentina.
