After WWII, the RAF had many surplus fighter and bomber aircraft that were still useful but required conversion to peace-time or training roles. Several De Havilland Mosquitos were converted for target towing. Three towed targets could be carried in the aircraft’s bomb bay. The target-towing gear was installed at the rear and underneath the aircraft and included 6,000ft. of nontwisting steel cable and four drogues. The winch was fixed to a pylon on the starboard wing centre-section and a second crew member was carried to operate the winch mechanism. A number of TT Mk.35's were operated by units supporting gunnery ranges in Germany and the Mediterranean. The main operators in the UK were the five Civilian Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Units (CAACUs) – No.3 CAACU at Exeter providing target facilities using Mosquitos from 1953 until 1963, these becoming the last RAF examples in service. This Unit formed at Exeter in 1951 to provide target practice for the RAF, Royal Navy and Army. | |
