more | Corgi 1/72 English Electric Canberra B Mk2 10 Sqn RAF Honington (AA34701) In anticipation of hostilities, five squadrons of Canberras were deployed to Luqa, Malta, and a further seven to Cyprus, including No.10 Squadron. The Israeli forces opened hostilities when they invaded Egypt on 28/29 October. This led the way for Canberra bombing operations to commence in order to neutralise the Egyptian Air Force. With so many aircraft in the area, it was important to identify friendly forces involved in the conflict, so all British, French and Israeli aircraft were hastily painted with black and yellow stripes on the wings and fuselages, much the same as was done for ???D-Day???. This was an afterthought and the RAF ran out of yellow paint, having to improvise with white paint as applied to WH640???s stripes. The strike operations by the Canberras and Valiants were successful, with only the loss of one Canberra aircraft. ???Operation Musketeer??? as it was called, continued until 5th November 1956, when Allied forces regained control of Suez. WH640 was one of No.10 Squadron???s Canberra B.Mk.2s, which was based at RAF Honington, Suffolk in 1956 and deployed to Nicosia, Cyprus in October of that year to participate in ???Operation Musketeer???.

The B(1)8 Canberra lost the one-piece "glasshouse" bubble canopy so "loved" by aircrews and sported instead a fighter type canopy. This was the offset from the aircraft's centreline giving the B(1)8 a very distinctive profile shared by the photo-reconn variant. 14Sqn (RAF Wildenrath) lost their B(1)8's in June 1970 after 8 years with the night intruder

more | Corgi 1/144 Bae Systems Nimrod MR Mk2 RAF Kinloss (AA35604) The Hawker Sidley Nimrod is a maritime patrol aircraft developed in the United Kingdom. It is an extensive modification of the de Havilland Comet, the world's first jet airliner. A major modification was the fit of a large weapon bay under the fuselage from which it can drop mines, torpedoes, bombs and other stores. Sonobuoys for tracking submarines are dropped from special launchers in the rear of the fuselage. The Nimrod is also capable of carrying American-made Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Sidewinder air-to-air missiles for self-defence.
The Nimrod has been the Royal Air Force's primary Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) since the early 1970s. The RAF uses two Nimrod variants: the MR.2 in the Maritime and Reconnaissance role and the R1 in a reconnaissance and electronic intelligence gathering capacity.
The MR.2 is due to be replaced by the upgraded MRA.4 in the near future, but meanwhile the current fleet of MR.2s are being repainted in the RAF's latest overall light grey colour as depicted by the model. | |
