Production limited to 2700 worldwide. While not as famous as the Flying Fortress or Lancaster, the Liberator was one of the most important 4 engined bombers of WW2. Serving with the Twelfth and Ninth Airforces before the creation of the Fifteenth Airforce in November 1943 Strawberry Bitch is depicted here in the desert pink applied to North-African based Liberators and wears a command stripe around its fuselage. This particular aircraft was a survivor of the Ploesti oilfield raid of August 1943 when one hundred and seventy nine aircraft left North-Africa intending to disrupt the German ability to fuel its combat forces. Fifty five aircraft were lost on the raid and fourteen aborted but the raid was successful. | |
