Corgi 1/72 FW 190A-4 White Leutenant Walter Nowotny (AA34301)
Neatly detailed die-cast model of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-4. Painted in the Luftwaffe's overall white winter camoflauge scheme and decorated as one of the few personalised aircraft, used by Leutenant Walter Nowotny, the Austrian fighter ace and Staffelkapitan of 1./JG54. Separate landing gear parts are supplied to model the aircraft in landed or in-flight configuration, along with a display stand.
Length 120mm/4½in, Wingspan 140mm/5½in.
One of the many Austrians to rise high in the ranks of the wartime Luftwaffe, Walter Nowotny flew almost exclusively against the Russians. He was the most successful Fw190 pilot on the Eastern Front, with all but three of his 258 confirmed kills being scored against the Soviets. On the 14th October 1943 he became the first Luftwaffe pilot to achieve 250 kills and was subsequently honoured with Diamonds to the Oak Leaves with Swords of his Knights Cross. He died on 6th November 1944 after attempting to engage US heavy bombers while heading an experimental Me262 jet fighter unit – Kommando Nowotny. Nowotny flew this Fw190A whilst serving as Staffelkapitan of 1./JG54 in the winter of 1942-43. A well documented machine, in stark contrast to the majority of the anonymous and unidentifiable Fw190s flown on the Eastern Front by all and sundry, there being few aircraft directly attached to specific pilots, this is the aircraft that Nowotny scored his Staffel’s 300th victory of the war. The toned down white fuselage cross was viewed as an unnecessary precaution on an otherwise white winter camouflaged A-4.
