In 2005 the Defenders of Malta returned when the Merlins over Malta project flew a Spitfire and Hurricane from Duxford to Malta for the dedication of the new Air Battle of Malta hanger at the Malta Aviation Museum. This commermerative set features Spitfire MkVB BM591 flying as U-2 from USS Wasp (20th April 1942) and Hurricane MKXIIA G-HURI flying as HA-C Z5140 of 126 Squadron RAF (10th March 1942)
Between June 1940 and December 1942 Malta became one of the most bombed places on Earth. The battle for this tiny island proved to be one of the most decisive turning points of World War II. The Merlins Over Malta Appeal sent a Spitfire and Hurricane back to the scene of their epic defence in September 2005.
