Corgi 1/72 RAF Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX With Diecast Metal Merlin Engine (AA31921)

A very special release of Corgi's excellent Mk.IX Spitfire, produced to mark the 70 years since the Spitfire's first flight, complete with a separate 1/24 scale Merlin engine model.

Armed with two deadly Hispano 20mm cannon, Spitfire LF IX PT396/EJ-C is modelled as flown by Wing Commander 'Jack' Charles (Royal Canadian Air Force), Officer Commanding Tangmere wing during August 1944. The aircraft markings include D-Day invasion recognition stripes and the Canadian maple leaf emblem.

This is commemorative pack also includes a highly detailed diecast model of the Spitfire's powerplant, the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, in 1/24 scale. Rated at 1,000bhp when the Spitfire was designed, the Mk.Ix was powered by 1,500 or 1,700bhp versions. The Merlin achieved excellent reliability and powered many RAF aircraft, from the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang fighters to the potent Mosquitos and Lancaster heavy bombers. Even today its great sound is instantly recognisable if one passes overhead.

Display stands are supplied for both the aircraft and engine models.

Corgi 1/32 P51-D Mustang Jumpin Jaques 3rd FS/3rd FG 5th Air Force Okinawa 1945 (AA34404)
In September of 1941, the Philippine Department Air Force was created; one month later, its name was changed to the Far East Air Force. It was under this name in which the Fifth Air Force saw its first combat action. Within hours of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces attacked US bases in the Philippines, destroying most of the aircraft while they were still on the ground. The remaining aircraft allowed the far east air force to become the first U.S. Army Air Force unit to take part in combat, conducting defensive operations allowing United States and allied forces to retreat to Australia’s northern coast. While in Australia, the Far East Air Force was redesignated Fifth Air Force in 1942 and placed under the command of Major General George Kenney. Kenney was General Douglas MacArthur’s component commander for all allied air services. Under his leadership, Fifth Air Force provided the aerial spearhead for MacArthur’s island hopping campaign. Providing an air umbrella for MacArthur, Fifth Air Force was an integral part of the successful campaign to retake New Guinea, the Philippines and by war’s end, Okinawa.

Corgi 1/72 German Focke Wulf Fw190 Oberleutenant Adolf Dickfield WW2 (AA34304)
The FW 190 was a late arrival in North Africa, making its combat debut on 16th November 1942. Over the next 6 months, II./ZG 2, III./SKG 10, II./JG 2, the Stab and II./SchG 2, all successfully flew the FW 190 in North Africa. Many aerial victories were achieved, and the FW 190 fighter-bomber pilots demonstrated how effective the FW 190 could be against ground targets. III./ZG 2 (re-named III./SKG 10 in December 1942), was particularly successful. This particular FW 190 was written off when its pilot, Adolf Dickfield hit an obstacle and somersaulted during take-off from Kairouan on 8th January 1943.

It was equipped with a powerful P&W R-2800-18W 2100hp engine, and made its first flight on July 2nd 1952. 14.F squadron (CO-ed by LV Pierre Ménetttier) was the first squadron to receive the F4U-7 at Karouba air base in Tunisia. From January 1953 to April 1954, pilots trained with a combat cruise in Indochina in mind. These pilots arrived at Tourane (Annam) on April 17th 1954, but without their planes.

Corgi 1/72 Focke Wolf FW-190A-4 SG2 Tunisia 1943 (AA34305)
In North Africa, an air concentration did not give back to Rommel the air superiority he had enjoyed during the summer of 1942. When the decisive battle of El Alamein started on October 23, 1942, the allies had a two to one lead in the airs. That superiority grew in the following months, the first felt results of the US industrial muscle on the battlefield. If Rommel's crushing in El Alamein was a blow to the axis power, it was nothing compared to the catastrophe of the allied landing in Morocco and Algeria: the whole northern Africa was in danger of falling in ally hands. It was the opportunity for the Luftwaffe to launch one of its last large-scale offensive operations, be it only of transport, in the Mediterranean area. Carried by aircraft, German troops successfully managed to occupy Tunisia, before the Western allies had time enough to reach it.
