A very special release of Corgi's excellent Mk.IX Spitfire, produced to mark the 70 years since the Spitfire's first flight, complete with a separate 1/24 scale Merlin engine model.

Armed with two deadly Hispano 20mm cannon, Spitfire LF IX PT396/EJ-C is modelled as flown by Wing Commander 'Jack' Charles (Royal Canadian Air Force), Officer Commanding Tangmere wing during August 1944. The aircraft markings include D-Day invasion recognition stripes and the Canadian maple leaf emblem.

This is commemorative pack also includes a highly detailed diecast model of the Spitfire's powerplant, the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, in 1/24 scale. Rated at 1,000bhp when the Spitfire was designed, the Mk.Ix was powered by 1,500 or 1,700bhp versions. The Merlin achieved excellent reliability and powered many RAF aircraft, from the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang fighters to the potent Mosquitos and Lancaster heavy bombers. Even today its great sound is instantly recognisable if one passes overhead.

Display stands are supplied for both the aircraft and engine models.

In 2005 the Defenders of Malta returned when the Merlins over Malta project flew a Spitfire and Hurricane from Duxford to Malta for the dedication of the new Air Battle of Malta hanger at the Malta Aviation Museum.

An excellent model of the Mk. IX Spitfire, to Corgi's high standards of casting, finshing and accuracy. This model is of MK392 flown by fighter ace Wing Commander James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson while commanding the Canadian wing of the 2nd tactical air force. Depicted here with D-day invasion stripes, to ensure rapid identifdication by allied ground forces. Flying MK392 he was credited with the destruction of 12 aircraft (Fw190's and Bf109's), 1 shared destroyed on the ground (Ju88) and one damaged. This was the aircraft in which he recorded the last of his 38 kills on September 27th 1944.
One of the most successful Spitfire versions the Mk IX was able to engage and destroy the new German Fw190's.

On October 1939, No.263 was reformed at Filton as a fighter squadron. Equipped with Gladiators, it was sent to Norway in April 1940, in an attempt to give air cover for British and Norwegian forces. Operating from a frozen lake, it had all its aircraft rendered unfit for action within 3 days and returned to the UK to re-equip.  Model Wingspan 136mm

Serving as Deputy Wing Leader to Clive Caldwell, Robert Gibbs achieved no victories in this Mk.Vlll due to the dearth of enemy activity in the area.Squadron Leader Gibbs returned to Australia in 1944 and flew Spitfire Mk.Vllls in the Southwest Pacific until the end of the war. Gibbs established Gibbes Sepik Airways in January 1948 and began operations out of New Guinea with surplus war aircraft.For the next 10 years his airline played an important role in the exploration and development of the Sepik River and central highlands of this area. Rector scored a kill in the American Volunteer Group's first combat on December 20, 1941 over Kunming, China.

One of Australia's leading aces in WWII, the diminutive Bobby Gibbles rose from pilot officer to command No. 3 Sq., RAAF, flying sorties and scoring ten and two shared victories during almost two years of service in North Africa. He flew "ET953," marked with his personal letter "V," while CO of the unit, claiming a Bf109 destroyed and a second damaged with it. Subsequently serving with Nos. 250 and 5 Squadrons, "ET953" was written off while still with the latter unit when it stalled on takeoff after its pilot tried to avoid a gunpost at Neffatia on March 2, 1943.

The Hurricane MkIIc in the unusual RAF Pacific theatre camouflage scheme with light blue/dark blue roundels, as used by 258 Squadron flying from Colombo Racecourse, Ceylon in Jan. 1944. This die-cast model features fine panel line detailing across the wings and fuselage, a freely rotating propeller and seated pilot. Landing gear parts are supplied to display the gear raised or lowered and a display stand is included.

Unbelievable value for a diecast model, this must be the most metal you can get for your money. And it's a good model, with folding wings, rotating propeller, good graphics, rotating rubber wheels and a hidden coin box.

Cheap enough to be a toy, its great for any air enthusiast. The model is based on a Wildcat of USN VF-41 squadron which was assigned to USS Ranger, and took part in the air battles over Algeria during the invasion of North Africa.

On 10th February 1940, No.212 reformed at Heston to carry out strategic photographic reconnaissance duties in France working closely with the Photographic Development Unit.It was intended to have three detachments each of 3 Spitfires.No.212 was equipped with Blenheims.After flying some operational missions the detachment in France was forced to evacuate its baase on 14th June 1940 and the squadron was absorbed by the Photographic Development Unit on 18th June 1940, which was then redesignated the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit on the 8th July

Ehrlers early Gustav has been given a coat of washable paint to which irregular patches of dark grey have been added, 77 recorded Soviet kills are recorded on the rudder to preserve this the rudder has been left untouched by the winter white wash.
