The Hellcat was the most successful aircraft in naval history, with 5163 victories scored over enemy aircraft. It shared a resemblance to the F4 Wildcat, but it was a completely different design. more | Dragon Wings 1/72 USAF P-47D "HV-A" 61st FS, 56th FG FRANCIS "GABBY" GABRESKI (50265) The model fighter plane is resplendent in the markings of the USAAF’s famous 61st Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group, with such delicate touches as a red-striped spinner. This incredibly detailed scale model shows fifteen German “kill marks” on the fuselage. In fact, “Gabby” was to reach thirty-one kills (28 aerial, and 3 on the ground) before he was shot down on 20 July1944 and forced to spend the rest of the war in a German POW camp. At the time this made him the highest scoring ace of the war, although several others were to pass his tally by the end of WWII. Later he also added another 6.5 kills during the Korean War. The detailing, the painting and the markings on this P-47D Thunderbolt are exemplary, this fine Warbirds forms a fitting tribute to this famous ace who passed away in 2000more..
more | Dragon Wings 1/72 USAF P-47D Razorback Turnip Termites 47th FS with Airfield Base (50304) A P-47D is the subject of a new Dragon Warbirds release. The finely crafted miniature from Warbirds is a P-47D Razorback version, so-called for the sharp ridge on the upper fuselage behind the pilot’s canopy. The model depicts a P-47D of the 47th Fighter Squadron, which was activated on 1 December 1940 and was initially based in Hawaii. The model bears the colourful logo of “the Turnip Termites” squadron and the plane is finished in a predominantly silver colour. The squadron was credited with shooting down eight Japanese aircraft during the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941, while it also went on to serve in other theaters of combat. Interestingly, the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron is still in existence today flying the A-10 Warthog. This is a spectacular model and it is enhanced by an authentic-looking scenic base that comes with the scale aircraft model. The diorama shows a section of airfield that is beautifully textured and painted in a most realistic fashion.
more | Dragon Wings 1/72 USAF P-47D Razorback Okie 87th FS with Airfield Base (50310) The 78th Fighter Group was formed in the USA in May 1942 before moving to England. The unit was re-equipped with P-47s, affectionately known as “Jugs”, prior to Operation Torch the invasion of North Africa. More than 15,600 P-47D Thunderbolts were manufactured by the close of WWII and the rugged fighter was used for high-altitude escorts as well as a low-level fighter-bomber. Dragon Warbirds latest release is a P-47D from the 84th Fighter Squadron. This beautifully produced scale fighter bears some decorative artwork consisting of “Okie”, an Indian chief in feathered headdress. Painting, markings and superbly detailed construction set this aircraft apart. A careful observer will also notice that this atmospheric item has contributed four “victories” to the unit’s claimed total of 697 enemy aircraft destroyed either in the air or on the ground.

He was killed in action in June 1916 with 15 aerial victories to his credit, though the “Immelmann” Squadron was to keep his name alive. This close-support Stuka group (Schlachtgeschwader 2) fought principally in the southern sector of the Eastern Front in places like Stalingrad and the Caucasus. It has received aspecial paint finish with a pattern of white splotches applied over the underlying green camouflage, it represents Stuka flying in the winter of 1943-1944.

This FG was part of Hawaii’s air defense force and it suffered terrible casualties during the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941, many planes being destroyed while neatly arrayed on the tarmac. more | Dragon Wings 1/72 P-47D Razorback 61st FS 56th FG Little Chief On Airfield Base (50305) The finely crafted miniature from Warbirds is a P-47D Razorback version, so-called for the ridge behind the pilot’s canopy. Later P-47Ds did away with this ridge in favour of a one-piece bubble canopy that gave the pilot better visibility. The model bears accurately rendered markings, including the “HV” fuselage code of the 61st FS and the aircraft’s name of “Little Chief”. This particular aircraft was flown by 1st Lt. Frank W. Klibbe, who achieved seven victories. Of special note is the fact that this model fighter is presented on a beautifully modelled scenic base. The diorama presentation is stunning and it means collectors don’t have to worry about creating their own display base to show off this fine model. The diorama captures the atmosphere perfectly and the combination is a real eye-catcher.more..

It was produced in many forms, including the A-8 powered by a BMW 801D-2 air-cooled radial engine. Introduced in February 1944, the A-8 could be fitted with bombs or a jettisonable 300-litre fuel tank. It also had a new wooden propeller with paddle-shaped blades and a new “bubble” canopy design. An R2 kit was available to protect the plane with a 30mm-thick canopy and windscreen, 5mm-thick cockpit armour, plus it had upgraded MK108 30mm cannons. Dragon Warbirds has produced a model of an Fw190A-8/R2 before and the latest release capitalizes on this. Item No. 50312 shows “Yellow 17”, the aircraft of Oberfeldwebel Willi Unger from 12./JG 3, based at Barth in May 1944. Unger was an ace from JG 3 “Udet” and was credited with 24 aerial victories from 59 sorties. During the process he was shot down no less than three times

more | Dragon Wings 1/72 FW190A-4 3./JG.51 OREL1943 LEUTNANT JOSEF JENNEWEIN Aircraft Model (50323) Dragon Warbirds has announced a Focke-Wulf 190A-4, of which 976 were built between June 1942 and March 1943. The Fw 190 was well-liked by its pilots and at the time of its introduction in 1941, this Luftwaffe workhorse fighter was considered superior to the Spitfire Mk. V, it was so effective that more than 20,000 were manufactured. Dragon Warbirds’ new 1/72 scale die-cast replica portrays an aircraft of 3./JG.51 flown by then Leutnant Josef Jennewein. The Fw 190A-4 carries a superbly painted two-colour summer camouflage scheme used at this time in June 1943 in the region of Orel on the Eastern Front. The distinctive “5” is finely displayed on the fuselage sides. Josef Jennewein acheived fame as a world champion skier, however he is better remembered as a Luftwaffe Ace. He flew 271 missions and acheived 86 kills, most of them on the Eastern Front. Jennewein disappeared after force landing behind Russian lines in July 1943.
