The 29th Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment landed in Normandy on 24 July 1944 in the role of divisional armoured reconnaissance of 4th Division. Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon ‘Swatty’ Dorward de Salaberry Wotherspoon, DSO, was the Commanding Officer from 1943 to 1945. Formerly of the Governor General's Horse Guards, 'Swatty' used a White M3 Halftrack as an Armoured Command Vehicle. Refitted with an armoured roof (not on this model) and additional radios, it allowed the CO to command the regiment while at a distance from the Regimental Headquarters. Acquired in April 1943, it was still with the regiment at the end of the war. Also attached to the regiment, Major D.V. Currie won the Victoria Cross, between 18-20 August 1944 at St. Lambert-sur- Dives. It was the only VC awarded to a Canadian armoured regiment in WWII.
