Hobby Master 1/48 USN Brewster F2-A2 Buffalo VS-201 USS Long Island (AVG-1) 1941 (HA7003)
Good diecast model of the F2A-2 Brewster Buffalo. Brewster, a company with absolutely no prior experience of building fighters, produced the F2A-2. Management promised more than they could deliver and production fell way behind expectations until the US Government stepped in and took control. The first mono-winged fighter for the Navy, the F2A-2 was underpowered and plagued by landing gear problems but nevertheless was a part of the tremendous upsurge in US naval aviation.
USS Long Island was a converted cargo ship commissioned June 1941 and the first USN ship designated an auxiliary carrier, being slower and smaller than fleet carriers but also much cheaper and quicker to build. The USS Long Island and her 8 Brewsters F2A-2’s of the of Scouting Squadron VS-201 tested the feasibility of this class of carrier and lessons were learnt for future development. The ship survived the war and was then converted back to a freighter.
