The Ju 87 was considered as one of the most important German military aircrafts during WWII. It was better known as the Stuka which means Dive Bomber. While the Ju 87 achieved great success during the beginning of WWII due to its accuracy in bombing, it suffered from lack of speed and defense armament. Without the escort of German fighters the Stuka easily became preys for enemy high speed fighters. After the Battle of Britain the Ju 87 was seldom seen in actions in the continent. In 1940, the Ju 87 D (the Dora series), with a more powerful engine Jumo 122F, was developed for the attack of heavily defended targets. In 1943, with the approaching invasion of Russia, the Ju87 G Gustav was developed for anti-tank purpose. The first Ju-87s received by the Italian Air Force were operational aircraft with the Luftwaffe. They came with German paint schemes and markings that were painted over with those of the Regia Aeronautica. The Italian crews changed the aircraft name to picchiata, meaning a good thrashing or can mean dive-bomber. The next derivative of the word is picchiatello, “slightly crazy”, a good description of plane and pilot in the midst of an almost vertical dive. Picchiatello became the new name for the Italian Ju-87. The Regia Aeronautica took delivery of some Ju-87D-3 earlier in 1943. These were assigned to 2 new Gruppi, 103 and 121 which meant inexperienced pilots. When Allied forces invaded Sicily, July 10 1943 the dive-bomber response was left to these Italians. They went to Southern Italy and Sicily to counter the invasion. The overwhelming aerial supremacy of the Allies literally devastated the Stukas with the loss of one US destroyer. Remnants of Gruppo 121 went back to Sardinia early into the 38-day campaign but 103 Gruppo literally ceased to exist. | |

The US Military initially ordered 144 Douglas Dauntless SBD-1s with only 57 actually being produced. The production of the SBD-1 was stopped in favor of the much-improved SBD-2. The remaining 87 aircraft from the initial contract were completed but were configured as SBD-2s.
Designed as a light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, various versions of the Dauntless served during the war with the US Marine Corps, Army and Navy. The Douglas Dauntless was the workhorse of the US Navy in the Pacific. The Dauntless dive-bomber was the only plane to fight in every major Pacific engagement and because of the battles and the courage of the men that flew them,this plane became one of the most successful designs of WWII. Production of the Dauntless ended in July 1944, by which time a total of 5,936 had been built in all versions.SBD-2 BuNo. 2106 was initially assigned to VB-2 (Bombing Squadron Two) aboard the USS Lexington and wore the side code 2-B-2. 2106 arrived in late December 1940 or early January 1941 and became the favorite aircraft for CAPT Mark T. Whittier USN. On December 5, 1941 the aircraft was left in Hawaii for repairs and survived the Japanese attack on the 7th. March 10,1942 Lt. (JG) Whittier and radioman-gunner Stanley flew 2106 on a raid at Lae-Salamaua New Guinea and were awarded the Navy Cross for
their actions.Once again luck would be with 2106 as it and 4 other SBDs from USS Lexington were left at Pearl Harbor in April 1942 for re-assignment. The USS Lexington was lost at the Battle of the Coral Sea. The plane was transported to Midway and assigned to VMSB-241 (USMC Scout Bombing Squadron Two Forty One). On June 4, 1942, repainted and wearing “White 6” the aircraft was manned by 1st Lt. Iverson Jr. and radioman-gunner PFC Reid. They were one of many SBDs to participate in the decisive Battle of Midway and one of the few Dauntless to survive the attack on the Japanese carrier Hiryu. Half of the VMSB-241 Dauntless’ were lost during this attack and both Iverson and Reid were wounded. It is estimated that there were between 210 and 260 holes in their airframe but some how managed to crash land on Midway and survive. Iverson was awarded the Navy Cross and Reid the DFC for their heroism during the mission.With so much damage 2106 was sent for a complete overhaul and reassigned to the Carrier Qualification Training Unit (CQTU) at NAS Glenview, Illinois. On June 11, 1943 during a routine carrier qualification flight the aircraft stalled and plunged into Lake Michigan. For 50 years 2106 rested 170 feet down in cold freshwater until October 1993 when it was discovered and recovered in January 1994. After conducting historical document research by the teams at the National Museum Of Naval Aviation, the Naval Historical Center, and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology they realized that not only did they have a rare aircraft type but also it was one of only 4 to be present at the attack on Pearl Harbor. Most importantly, BuNo. 2106 is the only surviving naval aircraft to have played a significant role at the Battle of Midway. | |

James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson was the top RAF Ace to survive WWII with 38 kills. In early July 1944
Gp. Capt. Johnson was placed in charge of the Canadian Spitfire Wing No. 127, 2nd TAF (Tactical Air
Force) comprised of 404, 441 and 442 Squadrons of the RCAF. Being a Wing Leader he was able to
use his own initials instead of the unit code. Johnson also held the record of never being shot down and
only having one German shell hit his plane throughout the entire war.
The Mk XIV was the most notable of the Spitfire family. Originally it was based on a strengthened Mk VIII
airframe so a 2,035 hp Griffon 65 engine could be used. The Griffon came with a two-stage
supercharger and a 5 bladed propeller. The fin area and rudder were enlarged and the overall fuselage
length was increased. The new Griffon engine surprised some test pilots because it rotated in the
opposite direction of the Merlin engine. The E winged variant allowed for improved armament

more | Hobby Master 1/72 Fairchild A-10A 81-0964 Mil Killer Ground Attack Aircraft Model (HA1302)
A-10 was the first USAF aircraft designed specifically for 'Close Air Support' (CAS) . It can be described as the outcome of the experience gained in the Vietnam War and the threats of the Soviet Union armour forces during the Cold War era. The first A-10A 'Thunderbolt II' was delivered October 1975 and deployment in March 1976. A-10's pilot is protected by titanium armour around his seat and the canopy is a large bubble canopy, which provides all-round vision. The aircraft is designed with dual engines and the self-sealing fuel cells are protected by internal and external foam. Extra titanium is used to protect some flight control system parts of the aircraft. All these insure the plane and pilot's safety from enemy fires. Though A-10 may be slow comparing to other aircrafts, it is extremely manoeuvrable and have proven itself as a deadly machine. Its main weapon, the GAU-8A gun, can fire 30mm shells made of uranium at a rate of 4,000 rounds a minute which is sufficient to destroy most armoured targets. Captain Todd ‘Shanghai’ Sheehy of the 511th TFS flew the A-10a No.81-0964 in Jan 1991. On Feb.15, 1991, during his 27th combat sortie, Captain Sheehy identified an Iraqi's Mi-8 Hip helicopter and he started shooting at about 8,000 feet using the 30 mm cannon for around 300 rounds. The Hip caught fire at the tail section and Captain Sheehy fired another 200 rounds to put an end to the Hip. The "81-0964" was one of the two A-10s which had ever achieved air-to-air kills in combat (the first was the "77-0205" flown by Captain Bob Swain who downed an Iraqi Bo 105 C helicopter during the "Operation Desert Storm" in 1991) . In 2002, it was stationed with the 23rd Fighter Group with shark mouth nose art linking her to the proud history of the 23rd Flying Tigers of WWII. more.. | |

The Ju 87 was considered as one of the most important German military aircrafts during WWII. It was better known as the Stuka which means Dive Bomber. While the Ju 87 achieved great success during the beginning of WWII due to its accuracy in bombing, it suffered from lack of speed and defense armament. Without the escort of German fighters the Stuka easily became preys for enemy high speed fighters. After the Battle of Britain the Ju 87 was seldom seen in actions in the continent. In 1940, the Ju 87 D (the Dora series), with a more powerful engine Jumo 122F, was developed for the attack of heavily defended targets. In 1943, with the approaching invasion of Russia, the Ju87 G Gustav was developed for anti-tank purpose. 800 Squadron Motto, "Nunquam Non Paratus", means "Never Unprepared",
In 1943 the 800 Squadron were the first to receive the new Hellcats. The Squadron flew from the
light-carrier HMS Emperor and the first assignment was anti-shipping patrols along the Scandinavian
coast. Next they flew top cover for large attacks against the German battleship Tirpitz. Later some F6F-3
took on some German Bf-109s and Fw-190s. Even though the Germans were faster they lost 2 Bf-109s
and 1 Fw-190. The 800 also saw duty in the Mediterranean, Malta convoys, Diego Suarez, North Africa,
South of France, Burma.
