The Final Tomcat Cruise

The “Tomcatters” are the second oldest operating fighter squadron in the whole of the U.S. Navy. The “Fighting 31” (VF-31) is based at NAS Oceana and in 2006, is undergoing a transition from the aging F-14 Tomcat to the more capable F/A-18 Super Hornet. An F-14D Tomcat is the latest item to join the swelling ranks of the highly acclaimed Warbirds range. It is decked out in the markings of VF-31, with the “NK” tail code on the red tail and a Felix the Cat cartoon picture. The famous Felix character is depicted running while holding a spherical bomb with a lit fuse, this mascot is standard on most of the unit’s aircraft. VF-31, who specialize in night-fighting, has the motto “We get ours at night”.
