| > Hobby Master Aircraft > Hobby Master Civil Airliners | Hobby Master 1/200 Lockheed Electra L188 Atlantics Airlines G-LOFB (HL1004) In 1954 American Air Lines was in the market for a 75 to 100 passenger aircraft for its
short to medium range domestic routes. In response Lockheed developed the low wing L-
188 Electra powered by four sleek turboprops instead of the usual large radial engines or
jet turbines. The combination of engine and the Hamilton Standard propeller offered a
much more reliable and fuel efficient aircraft that could travel at 375 mph for 2000 miles at
an altitude of 20,000 ??? 25,000 feet. When production ended in 1961 there had been 170
Electras completed.
The airline was first formed as Atlantique Airways in 1994 as part of the Air Atlantique
Group of Companies. They operated a contract and ad hoc cargo service mainly within
Europe. In 2001 management performed a buy-in to the trading company and the airline
became known as Atlantic Airlines Limited. In 2004 management was able to perform a
full buy-out and purchased all the assets including aircraft and all essentials parts and
equipment. Atlantic Airlines was based out of Coventry United Kingdom with a hub in
Li???ge Belgium. Atlantic Airlines was under contract with the UK Maritime Coastguard
Agency to provide a specially equipped Electra with to perform aerial spraying to combat
oil spills at sea. They also specialize in transporting hazardous goods.
An announcement that a merger would take place between Atlantic Airlines and West Air
Sweden was made public in October 2004. The new airline name would be West Atlantic
and their headquarters would be located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The alliance will create
one of the largest cargo carriers in Europe and it will continue to use six Lockheed
Electra L-188Cs as well as numerous other propeller and jet aircraft.
